New supercomputer to the University of Tromsø

Today, the University of Tromsø signed a contract with Hewlett-Packard for a new large supercomputer that already will be delivered in October. The theoretical peak performance of the system will be 60 Teraflops/s which is thirty times the capacity of the cluster that is currently operated by the university.

The system consists of 704 2-way 2.66 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon X5355 blades. It will have a total of 5632 compute cores with Infiniband interconnect on 55% of the system. The system will have 12.1 TB distributed memory, 128 TB centralized storage and 100 TB distributed storage on the nodes. The cluster will cover 17 racks.

The facility will be used for education and research at Norwegian universities and colleges through the Notur project. The machine is financed by the Research Council of Norway (through UNINETT Sigma) and the University of Tromsø.
